Make your own butterfly garden

Make your own butterfly garden

This spring, you can help many butterflies by making your garden butterfly friendly! Butterflies love gardens with flowers and flowering perennials. A butterfly friendly garden is not only nice for butterflies, but also for yourself. Your garden or balcony will become beautiful and will smell wonderful! That attracts many colourful butterflies. You can watch the butterflies for hours. Here are some tips how you can make your own butterfly garden:

  • Provide a lot of variety: butterflies love variation in your green oasis. There must be something to experience and discover for them, otherwise, they go to your neighbours. In this way, they find their way fluttering and find the nicest spots. To hide from the wind, to lay eggs, and to look for delicious flowers.

For variety in your butterfly garden, choose plants with different heights, ranging from a flowering butterfly bush that can grow 2 meters high. With variation in color you can also do butterflies a big favor, a border or pots with soft pink, clear blue and intensely purple bloomers, for example. This variation is also a pleasure for yourself: you immediately understand why the butterflies now choose your garden.

  • Create warm and sheltered places in your butterfly garden: butterflies need heat from the sun to fly, they cannot keep themselves warm. That is why most live in the (sub) tropics. So create a few warm and sheltered spots from the wind and in the sun in your garden. There they warm their wings, before they can continue looking for delicious food.

Pay attention to the wind direction to create sheltered spots in your butterfly garden or on your balcony. You can put for example a beautiful hedge or a large butterfly bush, which you can also put in pots.
  • Make a lot of choice in nectar for the butterflies: butterflies love special nectar, and therefore special flowers. If you want butterflies in your garden, you have to plant delicious plants for them, such as Blue Porterweed, Azaleas, Buddleja davidii, Echinacea purpurea, and Eupatorium maculatum.

You can also make a Mediterranean herb border with Rosemary, Lavender, and wild Thyme. You can also place those herbs in pots on your balcony.
